101.6x86.4 cm ~ Painting, Acrylic, Oil
I try to approach each painting without preconceived ideas. Sometimes, I leave a painting until I do not remember it at all. Years later, I may discover the painting and continue with a fresh approach. That is the case for this painting. Previously, I had built up layers of acrylic. Initially, I added a thin light layer. When the thin layer dried, I covered it with a dark layer. In places, I scraped away dark to reveal light. In other areas, I added thick layers of light colors. With the thick layers, I built up ridges which ran like veins through the work. I added sawdust to the acrylic in places and the painting revealed a suggestion of a figure. I added a vine crown to the head and leather strips to a suggested hole in the body. Thin strips of wood added protruding ribs. I also added sandpaper scraps that were reminiscent of abrasions. More recently, I scumbled and covered large areas with oil paint. The scumbling accentuated the veins in places and added to the movement, mystery, and balance within the complexity of change. Please make of this painting what you will, but it does not support a particular belief system. To me, it invokes a sense of the inhumanity that reverberates through time to such present-day persecutions as those perpetrated on the Falun Gong and Uyghurs.
